In 2008 there was extensive repair work done on Lengberg Castle in Austria. During the work, a vault was discovered under the floorboards which contained what looked like 4 modern day bras believed to be over 600 years old! This shocked fashion historians who thought modern bras were first introduced in the late 19th Century. In its prime, the bra pictured here looks like something you'd easily find from Skarlett Blue today.

an old bra that needs replacing

Given that the sun is setting after 5pm, and there are some signs of warmer days (despite the recent Northeast snow storm last week), we're thinking a lot about spring cleaning and because we live, work and dream about lingerie, we're looking at our underwear drawer first.

Keeping a bra for 600 years is obviously too long, but let's be honest, everyone has those bras and panties that they just can't bring themselves to get rid of.

Some reason you might be holding on:

  • Bras are expensive! A good bra starts at $48 and only goes up from there.
  • New bras are rigid and can be a little uncomfortable in the beginning.
  • No one sees it, so who cares if there are some holes?
  • They're part of my: laundry-day look, period-bloat look, I had too much fun last night and need a bagel today look, I just got dumped look, Sunday-Rot look.

At LL, we're sensitive to all these reasons and more that keep you holding on to your older styles (especially in this economy!), but we want to make sure you also understand...

The damage that an old bra or panty can have on you:

  • Remember, the band does all the work, not the straps, so if your bra is baggy and is on the inner-most hook, you're risking back and shoulder pain as well as effecting your posture.
  • Maybe you're single and thinking, who cares, no one is seeing it, well guess what, YOU'RE SEEING IT! Don't dress for them, dress for you! Self-love is real people!
  • Old garments can also risk real wardrobe malfunctions and the last thing you want is a bra busting in the middle of a meeting.
  • Your body is always changing so it's a good idea to get fitted annually in case you need a new size.

That said, let's talk about price. A good bra is expensive and sure it will last you 6 months (or more if you have as many bras in your drawer as we do), but have you considered Sale colors and styles? We love shopping sale because it's a chance to try something new or get a color we wouldn't normally think to wear. Sale doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the style, it just means we ordered a little too much and you can enjoy up to 70% off all year round.

In conclusion, don't be like those adults who still carry around their baby blankets which are now just slivers of yarn. Think about refreshing your intimates as a form of self-care; your body and mind will definitely thank you.
